MORRISBURG, Ontario - Officials from SDG Counties and the City of Cornwall, as well as contractors and architects toured the new $8.8-million Morris Glen housing expansion, currently under construction in the Municipality of South Dundas.

Warden Jamie MacDonald, Warden-elect Martin Lang, South Dundas Mayor Jason Broad and Cornwall Mayor Justin Towndale were among the dignitaries that marked National Housing Day with a tour of the multi-storey building being cemented into place on County Road 2 in Morrisburg.

The building will house 17 units, 12 of which will be subsidized. Four of the five ground-floor units will be barrier free.

The facility will be operated by the Cornwall and Area Housing Authority, which is the delivery agent for social housing properties in SDG Counties.

“We’re so pleased to see this important housing anchor being built in SDG Counties,” said MacDonald. “We understand that housing challenges are present throughout our province, and we agree that when a construction project of this size is undertaken in one community, it benefits the entire region.”

That sentiment was shared by Broad.

“This new building will add not only important social housing units, but will also add to the millions of dollars that have been invested in recent streetscape activities on County Road 2 in Morrisburg,” he said. “This brand-new building will complement the new lighting, pedestrian paths and general improvements we have undertaken.”

The Morris Glen expansion was funded, in part, by nearly $1.7 million from the fifth phase of the Social Services Relief Fund by the Ontario government that was announced in 2022. An additional $575,000 for the project is funded by the City of Cornwall’s Department of Human Services’ Social Housing Regeneration Reserve. The city will finance the balance of the project, or about $6.5 million.

It is anticipated the construction project will wrap up in the spring of 2025, with tenants expect to take occupancy shortly thereafter.
